Excerpt 2 from ANOMALY by Tonya Kuper

Another bell rang. I spun wildly, searching for the source, and my foot slipped out from under me. My left foot joined my right, sliding down a rocky surface.
A scream tore past my lips.
My brain fought to figure out what was happening as my hands gripped for something—anything—because I was falling. My head swiveled.
I couldn’t comprehend the giant, gaping crack I’d fallen into. A fissure in the ground at least eight feet wide. My fingers sunk into the cracked concrete, barely holding on. Sliding.
Then I looked down.
No end in sight. An abyss.
Everything around me blurred, and all I could see was black. And in that blackness was the one thing I was terrified of: death. My stomach pitched and my chest heaved, but no air moved in or out of my lungs. I was suffocating.
Ripping my eyes away from the darkness, I focused on my hands, still grasping at the gravely terrain crumbling beneath them. My right foot slipped, and my fingers dug deeper into the ground. It was a mixture of rock, and mud, and I didn’t know what. It felt like glass shards were being shoved under my fingernails.
I dug in with my toes, using the muscles in my legs to slow my descent. I slid to a halt, but the rocks and substrate continued to crumble beneath me. I searched blindly for a sturdy foothold. My foot found a rocky lip, but as soon as I thought it was safe, it gave way. My right silver flip-flop plummeted into the darkness so eager to swallow me.
Attempting to force my gaze upward, I focused on the contrast of the dark surrounding me and the bright light above, the line where they met. Technically, I’d die in broad daylight.
“Think, Josie.” The voice was strong, demanding. It took a second for it to register. “Josie, look at me.”
Reid. Reid was here. That’s where I was. I was at Reid’s place. I’d come here to train. I’m an Oculi. It all became clear as I broke free from the terror.
I wrenched my head toward his voice, my gaze meeting his. He crouched above me at the surface, his eyes my lifeline because he didn’t offer a hand. He wasn’t about to coddle me. That wasn’t his style. He said, “Breathe. Think.”
Dragging in an uneven breath, looking into his clear eyes, something clicked in the far reaches of my mind.
Stairs.
I Pushed with no effort. No headache, no nausea. I blinked, and stairs carved themselves into the side of the chasm, jutted out as if they’d always been there. With great hesitancy, I climbed the stairs on all fours, close to the wall. I could see the surface, right within my reach.
Whoosh.
The stairs were gone.
I felt myself tumbling, falling. Flailing along the wall of the abyss with nothing to stop my descent.
“React, Josie!”
Think.
I focused on the surface, on the light growing dimmer the farther I skidded. Earth. Ground beneath my feet. I Pushed. And Pushed.
Pain. Nausea. Dizziness.
Thunder sounded below, like the darkness of the chasm was rising up to swallow me whole. Something hit my feet so hard that it tossed me in the air.
Up. Up. Into the light.
My thoughts didn’t coalesce clearly, but I felt myself rising. The pain behind my eyes made my vision waver. I shot to the warehouse floor. Reid reached for me as I collapsed.
My lungs rebelled, and tears burned trails down my cheeks. Dirt covered my hands and caked beneath my fingertips. One fingernail had broken to the quick. It bled sullenly. I wasn’t about to look weak in front of him, though, so I held out my arm to ward off his offer of help. I stood tall on trembling legs.
Reid closed the gap between us, his arms extended like he would embrace me. “Josie—”
The light streaming through the warehouse windows dimmed and flickered. Darkness edged my periphery. I balled my trembling fist and slammed my knuckles into his cheek. White heat shot through my hand before everything went black.

“You’re in love with her, aren’t you?” Greg said in awe. Max snorted at the incredulity of Greg’s question. “I just met her. I’ve only known her for three weeks. How can I possibly be in love with her?” Greg sat up on the couch, same shocked expression on his face. “Stop looking at me like that,” Max told his brother. “There is no way I’m in love with my neighbor.” “I can’t believe I’ve been so blind,” Greg sighed. “I’m supposed to be the Christmas Cupid, how did I miss this? My pupils have fallen in love and I didn’t even realize it. I’m slipping.” “What are you talking about?” He was not in love with Bailey. There were a lot of things he loved about her but he wasn’t in love with her. He loved the way she walked, the sound of her voice, hell he even loved watching her walk away from him, because the view was to die for. He loved that she didn’t balk at the kind of car he drove. He loved the way she smiled shyly whenever he told her good morning. But that didn’t mean that he loved her, he didn’t know her well enough to love her. But he could see himself falling in love with her, if she would give him a chance. If he could just figure out what she wanted, he would give it to her. “It all makes so much sense now,” Greg whispered. “Really dude, what are you mumbling about?” “The waitress at the Pancake Shack, she was cute, but you didn’t pay her any attention. Last week there was the gas station cashier, who asked you what your name was. She was hitting on you and you didn’t even notice. The only woman you seem to have eyes for is your brown-haired neighbor.” Greg tapped his finger against his chin. “I think I’ve just figured out what’s wrong with you.” “There’s nothing wrong with me, doofus.” “See, that right there. You called me doofus, you haven’t called me that in years.” “Because you haven’t acted like one in years.” “I’ve never acted like one, but you only called me that after I’d gone through your stuff and found out something that you didn’t want me to know.” Max stopped pacing. “I’m completely lost. I have no idea what we’re even talking about now.” “Let me bring you up to speed, dear brother. You calling me doofus means you know that I am on to you, and I am. I know what’s wrong with you. I know why you’re so cranky.” “Please, feel free to enlighten me.” “I shall, but first, name one other woman that you’ve been this crazy about,” Greg said. He started pacing again, searching his mind for a name. The names of every woman he’d ever dated and or slept with raced through his head. “There was Bethany…” “She doesn’t count,” Greg chimed in. “She cheated. You dumped her and never looked back. If you were crazy about her, you would have been heartbroken, but you weren’t. So name someone else.” He tried to come up with another name, but no other woman came to mind, only Bailey. There was no point in denying it any longer. “There isn’t anyone else, only Bailey.” Greg began grinning from ear to ear. “You love Bailey. I can see it in your eyes. Case solved.” Max returned to his recliner and plopped down, defeated. He loved Bailey, everything about her. There was no denying it or fighting it, He was in love with Bailey Cooper.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Revenge is a dish best served cold… while wearing heels.
April has just learned the real reason behind her boss’ impromptu dinner invitation. He only invited her to dinner with his colleagues to prove a point: that he can show up at an event with a plain Jane and still be considered ‘the man’. She expected better from him and had secretly hoped that one day their friendship would grow into something deeper. Now she knows she will always just be his 'nerdy secretary' to him.
But her two best friends won’t let her wallow in her pain. They convince her to give Dr. Stewart a dose of his own medicine. The plan: show up at the dinner looking irresistible and prove to her boss that even nerd girls can be sexy. But first she has to replace her unattractive business suits with something sexier and more revealing. It’s time for a makeover.
Dr. Chad Stewart would never ‘really’ date his secretary. She was too good, to pure for someone as jaded as himself. It didn’t matter that he was half in love with her. But when he needed an ‘average date’ for a dinner party she was the first person he turned to. He thought his secretary was the perfect choice until he arrived to find her looking like his wildest fantasy. But now she knows the real reason for his invite and he can see in her eyes how hurt she is.
Can Chad convince her to forgive him for hurting her or will she walk out of his life… taking his heart with her?

“That’s right. Your plan was to use me to advance yourself.” “That was my plan. I admit it. I was wrong. What can I do to make you forgive me?” He sounded sincere. The fact that his eyes seemed to be watering as he stared at her longingly confirmed the sincerity she heard in his voice. But she wouldn’t fall for it. She wouldn’t let him in, only to be hurt by him again in the future. “There is nothing I want from you. There is nothing I want you to do other than to take me home, right now.” Those blasted tears were threatening to fall again. “Please just take me home.” Her voice broke on the last word. Chad held his hands up, surrendering to her demand. “If you really want to go home, I will take you home. Just please answer one question for me?’ She didn’t want to answer any questions, but if it would get her home sooner she would. “What is the question?” “When I touch you, do you feel anything?” Where had that question come from? “Um…” “I’m not finished. When we sip coffee together each morning, do you ever get the feeling that maybe we’re meant to be together? I know it sounds crazy, but even tonight, with everything that is going on, does a part of you feel the need to hold me and never let me go?” Yes, yes, yes, that was exactly how she felt. How did he know? A sob escaped her lips. She put her hands over her face. She didn’t want to look at him. She didn’t want to hope that maybe he really felt those things he’d just said. Hope led to disappointment and she’d had enough disappointment in her life already. She couldn’t risk placing her hope in Chad. He’d already let her down once. The sound of gravel crunching let her know he was taking a step closer to her. She took a step back, suddenly very aware of his presence. Sobbing into her hands, afraid to look up, she continued to walk backward and he continued to follow her. Her back connected with something hard. She leaned back and felt the rough touch of tree bark against her exposed shoulders. Chad wrapped one arm around her waist and pulled her forward. His hand settled at the small of her back. He used his other hand to massage her shoulders. The feel of his hands on her bare skin made her tremble. Why did she want him so much? “I messed up, April. If you give me another chance, I promise to never do anything like this again. Forgive me, please.”

Tracy Heweitt Meyer's A LIFE, FREED Book Tour & Giveaway

A Life Freed Banner

Writing a Series...Rowan Slone’s life
through three books

When I started Rowan’s first story, A Life, Redefined, I had no idea what her future held. I knew that she was a traumatized, struggling young woman and I wanted to explore her story; I wanted to dive into the psyche of a teenager who felt that self-harm was the best way to cope with the devastating events of her life.

I saw her in the eyes of so many teens, and even adults that I felt a story like this needed told. I wasn’t even sure how book #1 would end, but once I dove in, the story unfolded all by itself. I wrote her story like I was living it. I cradled her hopes and dreams as if they were my own. I cried with her pain, celebrated her achievements, smiled when something good finally happened to her.

Book #1 is a raw, gritty read that has been known to leave readers (by their own accounts) weeping. But I didn’t write her story to make readers cry. I wrote her story because life’s pains are all too common.

When I started book #2, A Life, Forward, I wanted Rowan to take a step ‘forward’. I wanted her life to model, what I hope, was real life. When we are down and out, change still happens and life can improve. But it’s not easy. Life is not easy. The foundation of her life is cracked, or even crumbling. But she wants a better life. In book #2, we see her struggling to achieve that.

A Life, Forward will likely bring about a few tears, too. How can a story like Rowan’s not? If I was to keep events true-to-life, she couldn’t run off into the sunset so soon. That was not realistic. But hope starts to creep into her life. She might not have all the answers and a golden walkway laid out before her, ready to lead her to a happy, shiny future. But she starts taking those first tentative steps.

Book #3, A Life, Freed, shows a strong, independent young woman. It has been over a year, in her life, since A Life, Redefined. Now we find her in a good place. Little Rowan Slone is an adult. She is working and going to college. She has found a new love. We, as readers, are eager to cheer on our wounded heroine who seems not quite so wounded anymore.

But our pasts don’t just shrivel up and die. She still carries her tumultuous history about her frail shoulders. As several poignant events happen in her life, she realizes she still stands on that cracked and crumbling foundation. To truly change course and move beyond the pain, Rowan learns she has to confront the past head-on. In the end, she finds what she always wanted.

And what is that?

I’m not telling…*wink*

My goal as the author of these emotional books was to follow her life as truthfully as I could. Book #1 is the hardest to read. If I had to pick a color to describe it, it would be black. I think of charred wood, sinister night skies, shadows lurking behind every corner. Book #2 would be grey; dreary, wet, heavy, but not quite as ominous. And book #3? It would have to be soft pastels like pink, orange and green. There would be threatening, dark clouds, but they would be in the distance-hovering but not overhead. A Life, Freed is about hope, forgiveness, love, family and, simply, moving on.

If you can make it through A Life, Redefined and its emotional sucker punch, then weep through A Life, Forward with its sadness and determination, then you can cheer in A Life, Freed when, by the end, our little heroine, Rowan Slone, puts the pieces to a new life together.

The stories are meant to be read in order; they are meant to show that regardless how bad life can be, change is inevitable and hope it always alive.

Cheers! Tracy

Excerpt from A Life, Freed
Book #3 in the Rowan Slone Series
That kiss.
Is there any way to explain a kiss like that? It could go up against any in the romance novels Jess used to read in high school. Even though I didn’t read them, she never failed to tell me the juicy parts that made even my toes curl. This kiss even rivaled those clichéd ones of history: Romeo and Juliette, Rhett and Scarlet, Princess Buttercup and Wesley, Rose and Jack. Now Rowan and Mike would be forever added to that list.
His warm, moist mouth, his soft, earnest tongue, the feel of his hands, his body pressed against mine nearly sent my soul shooting into the stars. The sweet decadent scent of the forest settled in around us like an embrace.
We were so tightly woven together at that moment, I didn’t think we would ever disentangle ourselves. Something told me we wouldn’t want to.
He moved his hands from my face, making my skin grow cold with the loss of his warmth. But then he wrapped them around my waist, lifting me until I was level with him. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him closer.
Fire tore over my skin extinguishing any coolness that I had ever felt in my entire life. His head turned. Mine tilted in the opposite direction allowing the kiss to deepen even further.
He breathed my breath and I his. I melted; my insides softening. To him. To Mike. I had missed him. And I let him know that with an even tighter pull around his neck.
He groaned low in his throat as he answered with his own muscles flexing around my waist.
“Rowan,” he whispered. There was so much in that softly-spoken word, so much past, so much present. Was there any future? Something told me there was. He set me back on my feet and dropped his hands. His eyes were questioning, confused, searching.
“I’ve…” his voice croaked and he cleared it. “I’ve missed kissing these lips.” He was staring at my mouth was an intensity I wasn’t sure I could survive.
“God how I’ve missed them.” Then kiss them again. Please kiss them again. He pulled his gaze from my lips to lock on my eyes like he had me in a vice, making it impossible for me to look away or even blink.
“Rowan.” His gaze burned into mine. “I love you. I never stopped loving you. Please. Please tell me there is another chance for us. I can’t not have you in my life.” He put his fingers under my chin and lifted my face toward his. His eyes traveled over my forehead, my brows.
“I have tried to act like I didn’t feel this way.” Around the outside of my eyes, over my nose.
“Tried to act like I didn’t miss you. Need you.” Mouth again, chin. “That I didn’t love you.” “But I can’t pretend anymore. Something in me changed when we were paired for that biology report. I didn’t even realize it until I lost you. I need you back.”
There were tears in his eyes, now illuminating the beautiful pine color that so easily matched the evergreen trees surrounding us.
“Please, Rowan. Is there a future for us?” But I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. What was he saying? Half of my brain and body were still back there with that kiss. How did he recover so quickly from it? The other half of my brain and body were relishing the closeness of him, the feel of his touch. I was all senses and emotions and feelings and things totally unrelated to forming coherent thoughts or processing what he was saying. I must’ve waited too long to answer because he stepped away from me, his hands falling to his sides. His eyes were still on mine but the tears were gone. What I saw there was sadness the likes of which I had never seen in him before.
“I’m sorry. I guess it’s too late.” He turned. I stared at his broad shoulders as they moved away from me. He was all muscle and height and gorgeousness; familiarity and strangeness; attraction and obsession.
 “Mike, wait.”

Daelynn Quinn's NEVERLAND ACADEMY

Neverland Academy
Author: Daelynn Quinn
Genre: YA
It was the worst day of Daphne’s life. Not only had her parents moved her from Atlanta to the middle of nowhere, but her boyfriend broke up with her in the middle of a crowded club and her parents grounded her for a month for sneaking out and stealing the BMW. All in one night! If she were back home in Atlanta it would be no problem. She could always find ways of getting around her punishments. But this was rural Georgia. And there was nowhere to go but woods and farmland. That is, until Finn showed up at her window.
Finn was the invincible mascot of Neverland Academy where Daphne’s brothers attended. For the five years since he’d been expelled from the all-boys boarding school, he lived in the old slave tunnels under the former antebellum plantation home. He and his band of outcast boys lived for pulling pranks on the school’s professors, and especially the headmaster, Byron Trappe, who had a personal vendetta against Finn.
Daphne grew to love life under the academy. But there was one problem. She was falling for Finn. Hard. She knew he didn’t want a relationship or anything that resembled growing up. But when the wall she built between them begins to crumble before her eyes, will she stay at the academy and face impending heartbreak? Or will she leave her heart behind and escape the dangers of criminal life, including a perilous encounter with the vengeful headmaster?

Excerpt:
“You’re not a student here,” a voice drifted from behind her as if a breeze carried it through a drafty window.
Daphne jumped nearly two inches off her seat and her heart thumped wildly against her chest. Quickly she hit “Send” and stood, guarding the computer screen. She was shocked to meet face to face with a boy who looked not much older than she. Judging by his stature, tall and athletic, he looked like he couldn’t possibly be young enough to attend, but his boyish face complete with deep-set dimples defied that thought. His hair, black as coal was spiked up in that “just got out of bed” look and he was dressed in a black V-neck tee shirt and jeans, which had worn holes in the knees. She was well familiar with the style, being in the crowd she was in, but this didn’t exactly look like a fashion statement. Especially not with bare feet that looked like they’d been through a few mud puddles since his last shower. It certainly didn’t meet the dress code for Neverland Academy.
“Apparently neither are you,” Daphne retorted, letting her gaze scan him from head to toe, but she refused to meet his eyes. There was something intimidating about this boy. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but there was something about him that made her incredibly nervous.
The boy smiled, showing off a perfect set of teeth.
“What are you doing here?” he asked, leaning back against the bookcase and crossing his arms in a cocky manner.
Daphne twitched nervously. Surely this guy wasn’t old enough to be a professor, was he? “I was just sending an email. See, my parents haven’t set up the Internet at our house yet and I just needed to get in touch with some old friends from—”
“No not here, in the library. I mean what are you doing at the academy? Don’t tell me Professor Pervpot has changed the rules to allow girls in.”
“Professor who?”
The boy rolled his eyes and sighed. “Trappe?”
“No!” Daphne laughed. “My brothers are starting school here. We came to help them move in and do the tour and stuff, which was incredibly boring, I might add. And speaking of Trappe, is it just me or is he a really creepy guy?”
“Don’t I know it.”
For the first time Daphne met his eyes and did not look away. She was dazzled by the clarity of them. It was like somebody sliced a lime in half and stuck the two halves in his eyeballs, with the flesh facing out. She’d never seen green eyes that looked so bright and clear. She struggled to look away, but couldn’t. His gaze remained on her, audacious and enraptured.
